This is my second written pattern for crochet scrunchies.  You can find the first pattern with this link:  Velvet Squishy Scrunchies .  I loved the first design and have had some great feedback on the pattern, so I wanted to bring you a new velvet scrunchie in a completely different style using some of the feedback I received.

Squishy Scrunchies

The first design was done by working a row of stitches around the hair tie, then building out from there.  I found that with this style, the band shows when stretched and my hair (thin and with a mind of its own) would get caught up in those spaces and wrapped around the band.  My sister, who has thick hair loves the original design!   I set out to figure out a design for a scrunchie that would essentially be a solid piece of fabric when complete and suitable for all hair types, and that’s how I came up with the Velvet Cloud Scrunchies.

*Notes*
Ch1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
Stich count will be in () at the end of each row.
When you create your slip knot, leave a long tail for sewing. 4-5 inches is fine.
Join at the end of each row, this pattern is not worked in continuous rounds

Gauge is not important for this pattern.  However, please note if you substitute yarn or hook size, your result will differ in size.

Pattern:

1.      Ch 6, HDC in 2nd ch from hook (5)

With the wrong side of row 1 facing you, join the round with a sl st into the first HDC of row 1 (shown below).  Ch 1 – Do Not Turn

2.      HDC in first stitch, 1 HDC in next 4.  Sl St to join, Ch 1 (5)

Because of the nature of the velvet yarn, stitch definition isn’t great and its easy to miss where your join will be and add or remove stitches.

In the photo below:  Arrow 1 shows your sl st join from the previous row.   Arrow 2 shows the chain 1.   Arrow 3 shows the first HDC of the previous row.  This is where you will want to sl st to join.

As you work around the hair tie, you will have to keep pushing it behind the stitches.  It will be easy to get the hair tie caught up in the working yarn, you will have to keep an eye on this throughout the pattern.

3-20.  1 HDC in each st around (5) sl st into first HDC of previous row.  Ch 1 – Do Not Turn

Right around rows 20-25, you will notice your scrunchie start to get twisted, no worries, just untwist it from the hair tie and carry on.  You may have to do this more than once

As you work the final rounds, you will have to stretch the hair tie a bit to fit the reminder of the rounds.  This will allow the scrunchie to stretch as needed without ripping any stitches.
21-29.   1 HDC in each st around (5) sl st into first HDC of previous row.  Ch 1 – Do Not Turn
30.       1 HDC in each st around (5) sl st into first HDC of previous row.  F/O leaving tail for sewing

Construction:
Line up your stitches on the end and securely tie the two ends of yarn together.  Weave in the end from the slip knot.

With the remaining end, whip stitch the ends together.  Lining up each stitch (5 on each side).  There will be a gap from where we joined Row 1 in the beginning, sew up that row of HDC to completely join them and close the gap.

Weave in and hide ends.

I hope you get as much joy out of your Velvet Cloud Scrunchies as I do.  Please do not copy or sell this pattern to promote as your own.  You can sell the items made with this patter, but please be sure to credit me and link back to Not Your Yiyas Crochet.

Thank You!
